Hands On Experience
Media Studies provides students with excellent hands on opportunities. We actively seek to provide students who graduate from our program a portfolio of work that demonstrates gained experience at Dixie State. Students are given the opportunity to make mistakes during the learning process, as opposed to on the job. Thus, students are better able to perform in the workplace. All emphases provide the opportunity for practical experience in the form of practicum courses and scholarship opportunities. Our hands-on organizations are Dixie Sun News, Insight Communications, Radio Dixie, and CEC Television.
Dixie Sun News is your source for Dixie State University News, Sports, Opinion, and Features! Our studio, newsroom and administration are located in the Jennings building, room 134. This gives media students the opportunity to earn real-world experience while they learn. The experience producing and disseminating Dixie Sun News via newspaper, broadcast and online formats helps Dixie State University students enter the job market seamlessly.
Insight Communications is a student-operated strategic communications agency seeking to provide clients with creative communication strategies to engage their target publics. Students are involved in the planning, research, creation, maintenance, and evaluation of public relations, marketing, and advertising campaigns. Clients range from those on Dixie State University’s campus to companies off campus, providing excellent opportunities for students to work with real-world organizations.
Radio Dixie, 91.3 FM KXDS and 100.3 FM KDXI, provides live radio practicum experience on DSU’s campus radio stations. Students learn FCC regulations, programming skills, news and sports production, and music programming.
The Community Education Channel (CEC) is an on-campus television station that produces live Dixie State Athletics’ events, in-studio talk shows, and a host of other programs. Students work under the direction of trained professionals operating cameras, technical directing, running replay machines, directing, and producing.
